Linux Helper (New Project)
Hey all, I am planning to release a new piece of software over the next few weeks that will help with the day-to-day use of Ubuntu/Debian and Arch distributions. As with all things Linux, I will be releasing this project as open source. I will also be maintaining this project for the foreseeable future, so you can expect updates to it. I even want and need your input on what you would like to see the software do to make your work with Linux even easier.
What the software currently does
- Updates the repositories and performs full system upgrades.
- Single installers, e.g., just Google Chrome or just Filezilla.
- Bulk installers, e.g., if you choose “programming,” it will download and install NetBeans, Eclipse, CodeBlocks, and more.
Who can benefit from it?
At the moment, the software is aimed at new Linux users, but anyone can make use of it. It is designed in a way that will make the terminal even easier.
Will it have OpenSuse support?
Yes and no: Let me explain. I do have plans to make this support OpenSuse, but it won’t be supported from the very beginning. Once the Arch and Debian sections have been programmed, I will be releasing the software in beta. After its release, I will be taking feedback and fixing any bugs. During that time, I will also be working on the OpenSuse section.
My plan for updates
This one is a no-brainer for me. I hate updating software on my main machine, so my plan is: if there is an update, you can check this manually by typing 99 in the software, and it will load a webpage that will tell you if an update is available. Then, the choice is entirely yours to either download it manually or stay on the current version. Granted, if there is an update, it is recommended to upgrade, but again, the choice is entirely yours.
